Astronaut Reveals Depression Following Deluge of Harassment Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also included high-profile passengers.

The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a public message, recalling a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.

She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and performed experiments during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her scientific research and years of training to the personal milestone of her background – was overshadowed under the deluge of gendered attacks.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after an attack during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

The Fog Begins to Lift

In the time since fulfilling her dream, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose support pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she said.

She added that amid the criticism, important benefits had resulted from the mission, including spotlight on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.

About the Mission

The computer-piloted spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The team of pioneers also included experts in multiple disciplines.
